Program description

The house is an open space for all the kids with the problems of HIV directly or indirectly. It is also called the house of “prevention”.

One of the main goals is to provide workshops and classes and also spend time with the children: listen to them, understand them, tell them that it is not just a canteen but that the house also a second home.

Kids have lunch every day and, after that, they have different afternoon activities to do. Some of the activities are: school support, English, sport initiation, computer, visual arts, juggling, choreography and music.

The kids are between 6 and 14 years old, the workshops divide them into two groups of different ages.

Volunteers tasks

Assisting in workshops: the students work together with the coordinators at every workshop which means that there is only one teacher per workshop and it is very difficult to give all the kids the attention they need in that way.

Volunteers also assist during meals times and afternoon snacks to serve and organize the children.
Minimum Stay
8 weeks
Spanish level required

I´m very glad I found Voluntario Global When I began to search online for organizations to volunteer through, it seemed very one of them was a business, primarily concerned with profiting of the abundance of foreigners wanting to donate their time to a worthy cause in a city in which there are plenty. Voluntario Global was the only organization I found that seemed solely and genuinely interested in working to effect positive change. Keep doing what you´re doing!

Availability

Monday to Friday, 1 to 5pm (volunteers can choose to work 3 days a week). This program is not available during summer holidays in Argentina (December, January and Febreury) andnd during 2 weeks in July (winter holidays).

Local coordination

Berta is the coordinator of the volunteers. She knows all the people who work there and all the kids that assists. She will be the one that helps the volunteer to integrate and to introduce them into the community. Also all the workshops have a teacher or a coordinator who will guide the volunteer so that he/she can help in the activities. Also, the house consists of a coordinator, and a psychologist who is in charge of the observation and control of the children and also guides the volunteer to be able to help in the best way possible.

Key information

The kids often have behavioural problems and sometimes it is difficult to know how to handle them or answer their questions. This is normal and the volunteer should not take this as something personal. In these cases the coordinators with more experience can help the volunteer to understand the situation. We need to have in mind that even though some of the kids seem aggressive the only thing they want is love and attention.

Location ans first day

It is located in the neighbourhood of Barracas, 30 minutes from down town Buenos Aires. The first day the volunteer will meet with the coordinator and begin the journey to the house. When arriving at the house the volunteer will be presented to the coordinators of the place and after that to the kids. She will also be shown every room of the house to familiarize with each sector. This day the volunteer will begin with getting to know the kids and the place and will be able to ask about any concerns.
