Program description

The children attend the community centres because here they have room to play, while it is too crowded at their own homes. The adults work all day and don’t have time to play with the kids or read a story to them. These workshops change the everyday lives of the children. Volunteers help in the organization and development of the different activities and make it possible for the children to have a welcoming place to play in.

Volunteers tasks

•Help recruiting kids to attend the different workshops.

•Help teachers with cleaning and organizing the room and materials

•Help kids to socialize and be respectful with each other and the rest of the people in the place

•Help organizing activities and develop new workshops. Kids are divided into different age groups.

•Games and recreation: kids play games to improve reading, writing and physical activity.
•Art and music: to stimulate creativity and help children relax.

•Sports: to improve motor skills, sociability and interpersonal relationships.

•Down table games areas, areas for children and larger spaces for activities with the larger body that may be outside the cultural center in open spaces.

•Sport activities on Saturdays usually take place outside the center, in a park or open area.

The overall experience was great. The kids are so full of energy which made such a difference to the experience. One of the main benefits was confidence with the language and working with children.

Availability

All year round. 2 to 3 days per week + Saturdays (10am to 1pm).

Local coordination

Each workshop has a coordinator and volunteers get to know all of them according to the activities they help with. Cristina is the general coordinator and is always ready to help Volunteer feel integrated and comfortable with the tasks assigned.

Key information

The kids are eager to learn and to play; they are capable of absorbing more information than we think they can. And they come to join the workshops in search for affection or simply to get the attention they lack at home.

Location and first day

This cultural center is located in the very traditional neighborhood of La Boca, only 30’ away from our Volunteers House in central Buenos Aires. During your first day, you will take a tour around the building and meet all coordinators and you will know the story behind their faces.
