Program description

This small English Institute aims at better preparing the children and young adults of a Buenos Aires suburb for a professional life in a globalized world. Due to the large number of students in one class and thus a poorer level of education at the local public schools, the 6 to 12 year olds come to Barracas for the extra assistance and attention that they require for learning English.

Up to 20 students are split up into small groups to learn English, during this time they are also taught about the literature, history and culture of the different English-speaking countries, often coinciding with the places that the volunteers have come from. The methods of teaching used are fun and ensure that each student gets involved and is given individual attention. This serves to further motivate the students to continue their learning.

  • Practice pronunciation, reading, writing, listening, grammar and vocabulary with the students.
  • Help students prepare for upcoming school and international exams.
  • Develop, if interested, their own teaching project on topics such as traditions and celebrations, historical events, music, theater plays etc.
  • Play games with the kids.
  • Serve as role models and mentors for the students.

My experience taught me a lot about myself and my ability to overcome barriers such as language and still be successful in engaging the kids in many activities, and helping share a sense of hope with them.

Haydeé, director from the school is the person who help volunteers to feel immerse.

Key information

Since the school does not receive any public funding and has difficulties finding qualified English teachers, it relies on the support of volunteers with native English skills. In this way students also learn about the different accents and cultures of the various English speakers. Many of the people living in this neighborhood have not finished secondary school. The students’ parents hope that the additional English classes will enable their children to receive a better education which will enable them to compete in the job market and consequently lead a better life.

Location and first day

There are two institutes located in two different neighborhoods of many contrasts: Barracas (about 30 minutes from the downtown area) and Berazategui (approximately one hour from our volunteer’s house in the city center in the province of Buenos Aires). On their first day volunteers should be relaxed, they with talk to the director, Haydeé, and meet other teachers working there. After that, they can start planning their future lessons and meet the kids.
