 Program description

This bilingual elementary school welcomes children aged 6 to 13 years, besides having activities like teaching English and basic subjects such as math, science, etc., it organizes art workshops so that the children develop comprehensively.

The goal for this school’s teaching methods is for the children to be open- minded, that they develop a critical mind and are individuals with a social conscience. It encourages participation, discussion of ideas and learning to listen to others.

The school needs volunteers who speak native English to help the teachers in giving classes.

  •  Help the teachers prepare the classes and workshops.

  • Practice the pronunciation, reading, writing, listening skills, grammar and vocabulary with the students.

The kids are brilliant and I don´t really mind all the questions. I feel very comfortable with all the tasks that I have been asked to do, particularly helping some of the older kids prepare for their high school English exams and reading stories to the younger ones. I don´t think I have taught them much English but I feel since I arrived they have been more confident in trying to speak English and they always want to practice it with me which I think is a really good thing.

Availability

Monday to Thursday afternoons. This program is not available during December, January and February (summer holidays in Argentina) and for 2 weeks in July (winter holidays).

Local coordination

The teachers who teach every English class will have the volunteers as assistants and will be their guides at all time. Also, the general coordinator of the English subjects of the school is the one who will continually monitor the activities, attending suggestions and concerns of the volunteer.

Key information

Most of the children come from middle class families with deep social awareness. The parents want the children to grow up knowing their traditions, the cultural diversity, and the social necessities of their country. The school is associated with the community to help with specific actions. They work together concretely with monetary resources for the teaching of computer classes for adults which is given in a community center where Voluntario Global is also working with volunteers.

Location and first day

It is located in the neighborhood of Flores, in the city of Buenos Aires, easily accessible by subway. The first day will be a tour around the school and the classrooms. You will have the first interview with the school’s director and with the coordinator of the English subjects at the school. The children will be curious and in the recesses come over to ask the volunteers about their name and nationality.
