Program description

In a small town school, more than 30 students are divided into groups to learn English in order to improve their future job opportunities and therefore their quality of life.

The schools in the area do not provide a good level of education and the English teaching offered is worse still. Many of the parents of the students never finished school and for that reason they cannot help their children learn.

The school is located in a disadvantaged area. It teaches “Reading, Listening and Grammar” among other things, in a fun and enjoyable way to motivate the students that choose to continue studying.

Volunteers tasks

The volunteers use their knowledge of English to help the students either on a one-to-one basis or in group classes. The different accents, backgrounds and cultures of the volunteers make the classes interesting and different and provide the students with unique opportunities to develop and learn how to pronounce properly.

Specific help:
  • Helping with practicing pronunciation, reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary.
  • Preparing the students for international exams.
  • Preparing games and themed lessons (eg. Traditional celebrations in your country...)

Emily - Australia
I had a great time volunteering at the English School "By your side" in Pablo Nogués, especially in the last month when I really got to know the children. At first it was a bit daunting - I´d never had any experience in teaching before and I felt like I didn´t really know what I was doing when I was given a group of children on my own. I also found it difficult because I am at a rather basic level of Spanish and couldn´t understand questions children were asking me at times, and also felt like I couldn´t explain my concepts properly. I also found it difficult when I had a group of children on my own that were all at different levels and completing different tasks. Apart from this, I was amazed at how bright the students are and found their motivation and dedication at learning English absolutely inspiring. Silvia is fantastic and all that she and the other teachers do for the children is so great. She made me feel very welcome at the school and I´m glad I got the chance to meet all the children that I did and form friendships with them. I didn´t even mind the long term trip all that much, except when I had to take it home by myself at night and it was sometimes intimidating. I would recommend this program to anyone!

Availability

Monday to Friday - morning and afternoon sessions. This project is not available during the months of December, January and for 2 weeks in July as these are school holidays.

Local coordinator

Silvia is an English teacher and a founder of the school. She works with other teachers and the volunteers. Together they carry out the tasks: planning and giving the classes, administrative tasks and creating workshops and special events.

Key information

The volunteers are models and mentors for the students. As the parents of the students do not know English, they cannot help them learn. So learning English has become a frustration for them as they feel that they will never be able to learn it. This is one of the main reasons that many children do not get an education, they feel they cannot achieve things. The volunteers must be creative and enthusiastic with the students so that they continue studying and wanting to learn more. The volunteers are teaching them so much more than just a language!

Location and First day

The school is in a poor neighbourhood in the outskirts of the town of Pablo Nogués, in the Province of Buenos Aires. It is easily accessible by train.Your first day at work will be very relaxed, just observing and getting to know everyone and how it all works. First of all you will have a coffee and a chat with the teachers and coordinator Silvia. Then you will start to plan together what will be your specific tasks and which classes you are going to help teach.
