Program description

The Health Centers work together with local hospitals and provide the community with basic health care and prevention. They put special attention to women and children through their doctors and social workers.

People are treated within the Centre and the doctors also go into the neighborhood to visit the community, their homes and to help analyzing the situation in order to help more effectively.

The “Centro de Atención Primaria” (Basic Health Care Center) has a comprehensive health concept that goes beyond the biological fact of the illness. Health is understood as a process affected by various causes, including poverty. Therefore, they mainly doctors promote community participation in preventing and finding solutions.

My internship was fantastic! Everyone at my placement site was incredibly friendly and welcoming. I learned a ton of new information, and improved my Spanish tremendously. My only regret is that I did not get to help the clinic as much as I would have liked. I didn´t feel like there were very many opportunities to give back as much as I received. But all in all for me it was a wonderful experience for which I am so grateful.
