Help in a community centre in Bariloche, Patagonia

Program description

The city of Bariloche is one of the most important tourist attractions in Argentina. It is full of hotels and other services of the highest quality, but at the same time it is a city with a high amount of poverty and a lack of access to education. Although it is a place full of jobs, the local people do not have the qualifications necessary to work in the tourist sector.
They can only just get jobs as cleaners. They do not know how to use computers or speak any foreign languages and this makes it very difficult to get other jobs.
A community center run by young people with the addition of volunteers help is trying to reverse the situation. It provides English classes and academic support, after school tutoring and soup kitchen or afternoon tea.

Volunteer tasks
The purpose of the project is to receive volunteers that can help with the everyday tasks of the community center: helping in the kitchen to prepare lunch, spending time with the elderly members of the community, playing with the children or helping the young people with their after-school educational activities.

The community center has all kinds of activities: recreational, after-school educational support and social gatherings for children and adolescents. There is also a kitchen that gives food daily to many people in the town.

I think it is important that the volunteers understand that when working in a project that involves teaching English, the progress of the student is not always the priority, often just the fact that the volunteer turns up and is available to talk to and help out is sufficient.

Availability

The community center is open Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. The volunteer can agree their timetable with the project coordinator.

Local coordination

Two coordinators help volunteer to feel immerse. Jorgelina helps volunteers to know about the city, accommodation and turistic attractions. Another coordinator from the community centre helps volunteer to understand and feel useful in the community tasks. .

Key information

The community center welcomes everyone, irrelevant of age, and it is a place of integration for the whole community, as the inhabitants of the town can otherwise feel lonely and separated.

Location and first day

Bariloche is one of the main cities in the South Argentina. You will be taken around the city by your local coordinator. Then, you will meet all the people who help in the center, and see the tasks that they carry out. Everyone will want to meet you, the new volunteer! They will all want to know your name, where you live as they are always so excited that someone from another country is interested in getting to know them and helping them.
